The largest town in Oman, the capital Musqat, is home to more than a million inhabitants. It is a peaceful Muslim town with many mosques, towers and friendly people. The Grand Central Mosque was completed in 2001 and consists out of men and lady prayer halls, a meeting hall and even a library. It is raised in plateaus above street level (as Omani customs require) and beautifully illuminated when visiting at night. Also the Sultan Qaboos bin Said Palace, the resident of the sultan, is well worth the visit. Other sites in green Musqat you should take a look at are Jalali Fort, Mirani fort, Al Alam Palace and several souqs or market places. The old port Muttrah is still the country's financial center and business district. Its cornice, a road coming from a steep cliff and falling down on its other side, is the place to be for excellent dining, entertainment and nightlife.
There are quite a few dive shops to be found in town, most visiting the offshore islands of Fahal Island, Cat Island and Daymaniyat Island. Other regions often visited by boat are the Bandar al Jissah and Bander Khairan regions, just south of Musqat. Musqat and the Musandam region are the two best known area's with still some spectacular undiscovered gems.
